What is 1 in 11?

What is 1 in 11?

As you’re reading this, 1 in 11 children across the world are out of school and not getting the start in life they are entitled to. That’s 58 million children who will not get the chance to fulfil their potential.

1 in 11 is a unique partnership between global organisations UNICEF, the FC Barcelona Foundation and Reach out to Asia (ROTA). We have come together to harness the power of sport and education to ensure that every child has the opportunities they deserve in life.

We’re raising money to fund three education pilot projects in three countries that will reach some of the most marginalised and vulnerable children – Indonesia, Nepal and Bangladesh. We will then aim to expand our efforts to even more countries.

Our vision is that no child should be left out. Every child deserves a quality education and the opportunity to achieve their dreams.

The 1 in 11 partners

UNICEF promotes the rights and well-being of every child, in everything we do.

Together with our partners, we work in 190 countries and territories to translate that commitment into practical action, focusing special effort on reaching the most vulnerable and excluded children, to the benefit of all children, everywhere.

Our Challenge

Every child has the right to fulfill their potential - and education is fundamental to this.

A quality education goes beyond academic and literacy skills. Integrating sport and play into education can help unlock their potential:

  • It teaches the values of respect, teamwork and effort
  • It improves concentration and attention
  • It inspires boys and girls to go to and stay in school
  • It can break down social barriers

Our vision is that no child is left out – every child should be given the opportunity to fulfil their potential and live the life they are entitled to.

Adolescent girls are playing cricket. Although there are no proper playing grounds for the young girls, they have managed to find a flat field just on the outskirts of South Hindupara, Cox's Bazaar Sadar, Bangladesh, 30th Aug, 2010

Partner commitments

Through our work, the 1 in 11 campaign will reach some of the most marginalised and vulnerable children in the world

We will use our global reach and network of influence to raise awareness and funds for education programmes that reach millions of children. We hope to inspire the world that integrating sport and play into education can be an important trigger to unlock a child’s potential.

The 1 in 11 programmes will kick off in three pilot countries - Bangladesh, Indonesia and Nepal - where ROTA and UNICEF have proven expertise and the ability to run education programmes that can help transform the lives of children. Our aim is to expand our efforts to an even broader range of countries.
